Every store in Publika serves up visual feasts. It’s just the law. They have to, because without it, the vanguard of our creative industries would have nowhere to go to. But delving deeper past the facade, you’ll find one of its residents with a little bit of personality.
Introducing an industrial café with a hint of science academia, CoffeeSociété celebrates great coffee culture of freshly brewed coffee beans and homemade cakes.
When asked about the footing of the company, the founders, Choong brothers, Kar Wai and Kar Heng, explained how they were inspired by a blend of traditional coffee-making and alchemy in creating the design. Kar Heng professed his love for coffee began while he was studying in Melbourne. When Kar Wai, the older sibling, visited Melbourne, Kar Heng brought him to all the cafes he loved. It was at Chapel Street, CoffeeSociété was born.
The two siblings then approached The Great Indoors to recreate rustic vintage industrial furniture with a blend of science laboratory apparatus as serving apparatus. Weeks were spent to carefully select salvaged wood to produced long communal tables and square dining tables with various coats of colored wood paint. The tables were accompanied with black matte Tolix chairs. Ceilings were filled with industrial caged explosion proof pendant lights and Edison incandescent light bulbs over rail. Walls were lit up with black 3-swivel arm industrial task lamps. The décor extended to complement the range of knick knacks and vintage collection.
The work was very extensive. Soon, as finishing touches, the café will be decked out with pipe shelvings and industrial hanging rack.
Drop by to check out the ambiance, especially on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm til late for their #CoffeeinTheDark – free flow of coffee for a mere RM10 of their scrumptious homemade Carrot Walnut cake.
