Background

As political stability was gradually restored following the Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s, China began a renewed drive towards the industrial sector to revive the economy and efficiency in industry. This period sparked a new era and the creation of various industries to produce and supply food and other consumer goods.

Established in 1969 as Beijing Dong Feng Hong Wireless Power Plant an amalgamation of factories composing of a ceramic factory, a radio and lacquer workshop and a jade factory. It was renamed as Beijing Dong Feng Radio Factory No.1 in 1970 and Beijing Dong Feng Radio Power Plant in 1979. The factory produced the “Hongyin” (红音牌) brand, “Dong Feng Hong” (东风红牌) brand and “Huan Qiu” (寰 “环” 球牌) brand semiconductor radios. The factory’s semiconductor radio’s were so well designed they even won first place in the country’s fifth national radio quality evaluation in 1973.

By 1985 as the country progressed and gradually shifted focus to other sectors such as construction, technology, finance, and energy, many factories like the Beijing Dong Feng Radio Factory began to see a slowdown and stagnation in output and eventually closed down for good.
